showing the flutes after being "sharpened" i.e. we attempted to make
the lines of the flutes more clear, on the stake. |

One
side attached using Kleco sheet metal fasteners. These things
rule. They are great because the
1) attach
quickly
2) exert reasonable amounts of force to hold things together.
3) allow you to check fittings without riveting
4) Did I mention quickly? |

the left mark is holding the top piece after we sanded through to 320 grit,
and have started on a bit of polishing with the "Medium Clean"

The
top of the chapel de fer after running the whole piece through the medium
clean polishing wheel. There are still a lot of imperfections with the
hammer work (you can see it if you really zoom in) and with the shaping, but
the helm still looks nice.

Inside
shot of the helm. Shows the, ahem, uneveness of the shaping around the
edges of the side piece on the bottom. Not a terrible thing, but shows
the expertise of our work. We might still take one more pass with a real
soft face mallet and shape it a bit more after we rivet the side pieces to the
center ridge.
(Sept 16,
2002) After
looking at the pictures and the helm, Mark and I decided that we just were
liking the shaping of the side peices, so we went an reshaped and replanished
the side peices. |

the left, compare
the lines to the picture above.
After a long
delay, we finally got back to work on the helm and to taking pictures of it.
