On the left, Johannes finishes the final shaping on the visor.  He then takes it over to the Baldor buffer for sanding.  Its hard to see in the pic, but he's working the piece on an expandable wheel.  I've heard a lot about these, and have been REALLY wondering if they are worth the price.  After having used one, I'll be buying one very soon.  They are much easier to use than a flap wheel, don't leave the bad marks, and quicker to change to boot.   IMG_1200.JPG

On the left is a pair of embossed elbow cops.  It was really cool watching him and Dave go through the steps to emboss, but it was very evident how time-consuming such things are.  Those simple flowers took many hours of work (on an already finished piece).

On the right is another nifty tool, a punch board for doing coats of plate quickly.  It has all of the holes for the front plates.

I just liked the lines of the helm on the left, and the dishing form on the right is cool. IMG_1204.JPG

Charlie's working on this super nice early period helm.  I don't know how well, the pictures will turn out, but the brass work is superb, and its a good looking helm. IMG_1206.JPG

Johannes tapping out the welds on the skull of a sallet.  Apparently, when you weld stainless it really likes to pucker the metal, and some hammer work is necessary after completion.

As an assignment, Johannes had me try to raise a copper bowl.  He and his apprentice Dave showed me how and gave me tons of assistance the whole way through.  The pic on the right and below is after the end of the first pass.

On the right is the beginning of the second pass.  We have annealed the metal (by heating it and then quenching it) and are compressing it inwards. IMG_1210.JPG

About halfway through the second pass.   It starts getting really difficult as you get towards the edges of the piece.

There's me holding my (well, mine and Dave's and Johannes') work.
